Your Weekly Guide to Leveraging Technology in College Counseling
Welcome to Tech-Neill-ogy #33!
I returned to work this week, finally. I still have a hard time getting my mind around life in the southern hemisphere and its luxurious summer holiday in December/January. In any case, a lot happened this past week, and you can read more on this LinkedIn post.
Perhaps most importantly, I was notified by many of you that my “Buy me a coffee” link was not working! I appreciate those of you who were willing to support the work that goes into this newsletter in this way. That said, some tech issues on my end have now been sorted, so you can click on the link now!
One AI tool I feel compelled to share right off the bat this week is Fliz, which takes written content (like this newsletter), and renders it into a video format. For those of us looking for novel ways to capture the attention of our social media-focused student constituencies, this is a great tool. Check out the video below, which was made in a few minutes and is based upon last week’s Tech-Neill-ogy newsletter!
Thanks, as always, to those of you who share resources with me. I appreciate all of it! In any case, feel free to drop me an email at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you!
This one is a quite helpful tool; however, I strongly recommend that you ensure in your settings that you are not sharing your information publicly, particularly if you reference student or adult names in your meeting notes. That said, the gist of this one is to upload PDFs of your annual meeting notes document as well as PDFs of previous years. (We keep all our meeting agendas and notes in the same document.) And then you share this prompt:
These are the agendas of our Office of College Counseling meetings from the past two years and from so far this year. We have a meeting today, and I need your help with two things:
1. Please review our recent agendas and notes (from the "2023-24 Graded OCC Agendas & Notes" document) and suggest 5 specific things that we should address in today's meeting. Please also include a rationale for why this was included.
2. Please review meetings from similar times in previous years (from the "2021-22 Graded OCC Agendas & Notes" document and from the "2022-23 Graded OCC Agendas & Notes" document) and suggest 5 more things that we should address in today's meeting, along with the rationale for including it.
I think you will be surprised with what this kicks out. Certainly some good reminders. Some of the topics are very general, and so I am continuing to work on refining the prompt to obtain greater specificity. But give it a try!
As always, if you’d like to explore some of the other hacks, tips, and prompts I’ve shared here and elsewhere, check out this link. If you have any great prompts or questions about prompting, send me a note at [email protected].
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the power of AI technology in helping to prepare individuals (e.g. our students) for interviews. It seems that some believe the interview is dying. I have no access to whether this is true or not, but I can say that AI can be a boon for an individual preparing for one. I’m quite keen to see where this technology will take us. For now, I hope you enjoyed this week’s newsletter!
And happy counseling,
Jeff
