Your Weekly Guide to Leveraging Technology in College Counseling

Welcome to Tech-Neill-ogy #42!

Here’s a quick update from LinkedIn, but today is a new day. I’m sharing publicly that I’ll be leaving my current role at Graded at the end of this year to pursue my professional dream of becoming a chef. I’ve decided to pursue a Grand Diploma from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. As such, I’ll continue the newsletter to the end of the school year in June and then put it to bed. I hope you can wish me and my family well in our new endeavors in Europe!

This one is a more elaborate video of a project we did with our seniors this past year to help them refine the image of themselves that they put forth in their applications by utilizing an elevator pitch. Take a look! (Reminder: there is no sound!)

What I discovered was that some students were so frustrated with the output — after running it a few times even! — that they went back and tried to edit their answers to their brag sheet questions differently and, from all I could tell, more accurately and thoroughly. Then we gave them some prompts to use this as a lens to evaluate things like their resume and essays. Works pretty well!

Some previous prompts are shared at this link and on my YouTube channel. However, if you have any great prompts or questions about prompting, send me a note at [email protected].

Last week I had a great meeting with the creators of Arci, a software tool for counselors. Arci's mission is to bring the power of the technology of today (i.e. AI) to the counseling space. This includes features like building college lists and profile building ideas based on a student's profile, interests, and preferences. This helps independent counselors and school counselors with some of the legwork. Arci's platform, which is completely customizable to a customer's requirements, equips students and counselors with tools to help through the counseling journey. I encourage anyone interested to reach out and try out the tools. Pretty interesting stuff, to be honest! Find them here: https://learnonarci.com/

By the way, April Fools’! Neither Graded nor you loyal readers will get rid of me that easily. Though I dream regularly about becoming a chef, I will be back at Graded next year, and I’ll continue on with the newsletter! My culinary adventures will have to remain amateur for now… Enjoy!

And happy counseling,

Jeff
