Your Weekly Guide to Leveraging Technology in College Counseling
Welcome to Tech-Neill-ogy #45!
So apologies for missing last week’s newsletter, but I managed to contract Dengue Fever, which was awful. In any case, I got back to work on Thursday and seem to be past it enough to be spending this week in London at the BMI-Times Higher Education Global Forum. I look forward to seeing so many of you there!
I just wanted to remind you about the second part of my two-part webinar series for UCLAxOpen, which is free, on AI in College Admissions on May 7 at 5:00 PM PT. Click the link to register. I’m excited about this one as I’ll be joined by a current student of mine and a pair of colleagues, all of whom have education-related AI products to share.
Also, farther on down the line, on Tuesday, July 30, also at 5:00 PM PT, I’ll be leading another webinar, this one with the legendary Jon Boekenstedt from Oregon State University on the current state of US college admissions. We will explore all sorts of different topics in what is bound to be a fun conversation. You cannot register yet, but I wanted to put this on your radar, and, again, this is free through UCLAxOpen. (You can get on the mailing list, which I think will notify you when registration opens in the following link as well as explore other webinars through the program featuring conversations with folks like Akil Bello, Peter Van Buskirk, and Phil Moreno: https://www.uclaextension.edu/education/higher-education-adult-educators/courses.)
For now, please enjoy this week’s newsletter!
I had this idea in reading through a suggested prompt for creating a list of weekly chores for little kids and adapted it for college counseling. It references an idea once shared during a Third Thursday by Tim Munnerlyn of a giant sticker chart on the wall of a college counseling office. Copy-and-paste this into your chatbot of choice. I think you’ll like it!
Help me make a task chart suitable for high school juniors working their way through the university advising process in semester 2 of the year.
The tasks should include all of the details of an application process, regardless of where in the world the students are applying.
The tasks should include, among those you identify: 3 individual meetings with their college counselor, a family meeting, a draft of a US-style essay, a draft of a UK-style essay, their brag sheet, a list of 12-15 researched universities, requested letters of recommendation from two teachers, etc.
Student names would go in the first column and the tasks would go across the top of the chart in the first row.
Please offer a sticker-based chart.
Some previous prompts are shared at this link and on my YouTube channel. However, if you have any great prompts or questions about prompting, send me a note at [email protected].
A lot of good stuff in this week’s newsletter, but, lest I forget to share this, here is the most important video on AI you could watch this week:
Enjoy!
And happy counseling,
Jeff
