Your Weekly Guide to Leveraging Technology in College Counseling

Welcome to Tech-Neill-ogy #47!

I frequently refer to this time of year as the “downhill sprint,” in that we are all going to make it to the bottom of the hill one way or another; we just hope to keep our feet beneath us. Here’s a recap of last week. We are two weeks out from graduation, but there’s a ton between now and then.

I think the big news right now in the intersection of technology and college counseling is the likely announcement today by OpenAI of a search engine to rival Google. Worth keeping an eye out for the release!

For now, please enjoy this week’s newsletter! Hopefully there’s a tip or two here that you find helpful. And here’s to keeping our feet beneath us!

I’m sure this one will provoke some opinions! A while back, I was tinkering with this AI software called Brancher to create an app. I chose to create an app that accepts minimal input from a user and creates a letter of continued interest. Take a look.

I use this to incite conversation and debate among students in the UCLA Extension course I teach on “College Counseling for International Students.” Some are understandably critical of app, while others appreciate that it shows a student how to go about writing these things. In any case, I hope this gets you thinking some!

Some previous prompts are shared at this link and on my YouTube channel. However, if you have any great prompts or questions about prompting, send me a note at [email protected].

I look forward to hearing from you about this week’s newsletter. For those of you who participate, this month’s Third Thursday will take place this week. For now, best wishes in keeping your feet beneath you!

And happy counseling,

Jeff
